Exploring How Eliminating Limiting Beliefs Can Alter Your Destiny
“Limiting Beliefs” is a modern term for a problem known since ancient times.
Mahatma Gandhi was certainly a man that didn’t give in to any limiting beliefs and states, “If I have the belief that I can do it, I shall surely acquire the capacity to do it, even if I may not have it at the beginning.”
According to motivational speaker Denis Waitley, “If you believe you can, you probably can. If you believe you won’t, you most assuredly won’t. Belief is the ignition switch that gets you off the launching pad.”
Unfortunately, many will forever be hampered by their self-inflicted limiting beliefs, and sadly, many never acquire the capacity to overcome them or tap into their unlimited potential.
To clearly define what a limiting belief is, think of it as an anecdote or saying about ourselves that tells us about what we cannot do. These beliefs can become so steadfast in our mindset that people may not ever challenge them, even if logically we know better.
So getting rid of these limiting beliefs should be easy, right? Just be aware of when these thoughts occur and ignore them. Our problem’s solved with no fuss.
Only it may not be as simple as that.
Childhood behavior experts have long urged parents not to specifically label their children as troublemakers because kids have incredible internalization mechanisms: a child hears that he can do no right for long enough and he will truly believe he is incapable of being good indeed. Later in their adult life they can continue to subconsciously hold these feelings that may damper their motivation in careers, relationships, money, and every other aspect of their lives. Even if it makes no logical sense, these beliefs reinforced since childhood still hold people back.
Even more seemingly benign labels can shape a child’s identity that could forge limiting beliefs. A girl constantly called a tomboy may feel later in life that she will never understand and connect with other women. Why not? Because she’s always been a tomboy, of course she can’t understand! Why even try?
People in Western individualist cultures will tie their perceived roles into their personal identity and make it much harder to differentiate and identify their limiting beliefs. People will do and not do things because that is “who they are.” Extracting our limiting beliefs from our identities is crucial since identifying limiting beliefs is the first step to exorcising them and ultimately transcending them.
Well, why not? Is the end of the sentence something you want to achieve or obtain? What, objectively, stops you? You may even feel another kind of fear when you identify and let go of your fear of failure: what if you succeed??! Your whole identity will have to change! You’ll have to “grow into” the next phase of your life, without the structures that contain and confine you!
Think carefully about your goals and desires. What’s stopping you from achieving them? Perhaps there are some tangible, rational reasons. However, perhaps there are not. If the reasons sound anything like, “That’s just not the kind of person I am,” then certainly you should reconsider your position. If it’s something you want, and there’s literally nothing standing in your way, then yes, you are that person and you can and will accomplish anything you set your mind to.
Exposing limiting beliefs allows for explosive expansion of your potential. Get rid of the limiting beliefs, and you can stop wishing and start planning!
